CHAPTER 1
Adrian and Julian, two brothers with a taste for adventure, lived in Westville, a small town outside the big, bustling city of Oakwood. They shared an endless curiosity for mysteries, mostly because their father, Detective Omar, often shared fascinating tales of his exciting investigations. Inspired by their father’s stories, Adrian and Julian dreamed of becoming detectives themselves one day.
One morning, their friend Dion rushed to their house, panting and upset.
“You won’t believe it, guys! Someone stole my motorbike! It’s so expensive. My parents are going to be furious that I didn’t take good care of it!”
“Oh no! What happened?” asked Adrian, shocked that a robbery like this could take place in their quiet neighborhood.
“I left it in my garage last night like I always do,” said Dion, “but when I woke up this morning, it was gone!” Dion ran his hands through his hair with obvious worry. “What am I going to do?”
Adrian and Julian looked at each other and had the same thought.
“We should help Dion find his motorbike,” said Julian. “It’s our chance to put our detective skills to the test.”
Dion’s eyes lit up with hope. “That’s a great idea! I knew I could count on you guys.”
They all went to Dion’s garage to look at the scene of the crime. As they examined it, Adrian noticed something odd on the floor—a trail of muddy footprints leading towards the nearby woods.
“Look, these footprints might be a clue,” he said.
Dion agreed. “Let’s follow the trail and see where it leads.”
Their adventure had just begun.
CHAPTER 2
Following the muddy footprints, the trio ventured deep into the woods outside town. The trail eventually led them to an empty cabin hidden among the trees.
Someone may have lived there once, but they left a long time ago. The windows were broken, the door was open, and cracked and peeling shingles covered the outside.
They wanted to be very quiet, and since Adrian had a hearing disorder, Julian knew how to sign to send him messages without talking.
Julian signed, “What a mess! Looks like the only ones living here are ghosts.”
Adrian laughed and signed back, “Yeah, and they’re not very good housekeepers.”
Dion wasn’t in the mood to be left out. “Okay, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve never seen this cabin before,” he said shakily. “It’s strange that the footprints led us here.”
Adrian decided to investigate further and gently pushed the cabin door further open. Cautiously, they all stepped inside, but the empty room confirmed their belief—no one had been in the cabin for a long while.
Dust covered the floors while spider webs crept up to touch the ceiling. A large bug scrambled across the living room floor as they looked around.
“Nothing here but a lot of insects,” said Dion. “Let’s get out of here. This place is giving me the creeps.”
As they were about to leave, Julian looked down and saw a note sticking out of the end of a ripped and dirty rug. He picked up the note, and everyone gathered around him as he read it.
“You won’t find it here. —R.”
Dion clenched his fists in frustration. “Who’s ‘R,’ and what does this note mean?”
Adrian answered, “‘R’ might be the one who took your motorbike, Dion. But why would he leave us a clue?”
Julian and Dion agreed that it was very strange for a thief to leave his initial on a note and shook their heads in confusion. They left the cabin and returned to Westville, determined to uncover the identity of “R,” the reason he—or she—left the note, and finally, the location of the stolen motorbike. But they were further than ever from any answer.
CHAPTER 3
Back home, the trio decided to investigate possible suspects who might know something about the theft. They had three people in mind:
1. Ricky, a teenager who had recently said he was jealous of Dion's motorbike.
2. Sasha, who worked at a shop in town and had shown a serious interest in the motorbike.
3. Mr. Kamara, the town’s car mechanic, who knew a lot about motorbikes and had been acting suspiciously lately.
Their first stop was Ricky’s house. He greeted them with a nervous smile. “Hey, guys! What brings you here?”
Adrian got straight to the point. “Ricky, have you heard about Dion’s motorbike getting stolen?”
Ricky’s eyes widened. “Yeah, I heard. Why?”
Julian continued, “Do you know anyone who might have a reason to steal it?”
Ricky hesitated for a moment. “Well, there’s Sasha. She’s been eyeing that motorbike for a while now. She even asked me about it.”
Dion frowned. “Sasha? I didn’t expect that,” he lied, not letting on that she was already a suspect.
“But what about you, Ricky?” Adrian said. “You were jealous of that bike from the start. Maybe you decided that it should be yours!”
Ricky’s eyes widened in horror.
“Me?” he said in a terrified voice. “I would never steal a bike! Or anything for that matter. I’m not a thief!”
The boys thought that Ricky might be objecting too much and too loudly, which could be a sign that he was guilty. But there was no motorbike around Ricky’s house that they could see, so they had to leave it alone for the time being.
“I still think he should stay a suspect,” said Julian. “He just sounded guilty, and he could be hiding the motorbike anywhere, even in his garage.”
“Plus,” said Adrian, “his name obviously starts with ‘R.’”
“Yeah,” said Dion, “but we can’t prove anything, so let’s head to Sasha’s. We might have better luck there.”
They walked across town to the gift shop where Sasha worked after school and on weekends. Her family didn’t have much money, so she tried to help out as much as she could.
“Maybe Sasha figured she’d never be able to afford a motorbike, and the only way she’d get one was to steal it,” said Adrian.
“I’d hate to think that, but it’s possible,” said Julian.
Sasha’s curly hair was tucked back, and she wore a store apron as she busily rearranged items on shelves. She greeted the boys warmly when they walked into the shop.
“Hi guys! How can I help you today?”
Julian asked, “Sasha, what can you tell us about the motorbike theft?”
Sasha appeared genuinely surprised. “What?! A motorbike theft? That’s terrible news. Whose bike?”
Dion spoke up. “Mine.”
“Oh, Dion,” said Sasha with sympathy in her voice. “I’m so sorry. I know how much you loved that bike.”
“Yeah,” said Dion. “And I know that you liked it too. Ricky mentioned that you were interested in my motorbike.”
Sasha chuckled. “Oh, Dion, I was just admiring it from afar. I’m not sure I’d even be comfortable driving a motorbike, but it sure is a beauty! Do you have any idea who might have taken it?”
“That’s what we’re trying to find out,” said Adrian.
“Well,” said Sasha, “I wish I could help, but if I see the motorbike anywhere or hear anything about it, I’ll be sure to let you know.”
As the boys walked away, they all agreed that Sasha either didn’t steal the bike or that she was a very good actor.
With two suspects down (although they still weren’t sure about Ricky), they decided to visit Mr. Kamara’s auto repair shop. The bell above the door jingled as they entered. Mr. Kamara, a middle-aged man with graying hair, was busy inspecting a car.
Adrian greeted him. “Hi, Mr. Kamara. We’re investigating Dion’s motorbike theft, and we heard you might know something.”
Mr. Kamara raised an eyebrow. “Dion’s motorbike? I haven’t heard anything about it.”
Dion pressed, “We were thinking that maybe you could have used it around here, Mr. Kamara. We know how interested you are in cars and bikes.”
Mr. Kamara raised both his eyebrows.
“And how would I have gotten it here? Stolen it? You’d better not be making that suggestion, or I’ll be sure to talk to your parents about your manners,” said Mr. Kamara somewhat angrily.
Julian said, “Don’t be mad at us for wondering, Mr. Kamara. We’re exploring anywhere a motorbike might be hiding and not be noticed.”
Mr. Kamara calmed down. “I’ve always been an honest mechanic, boys. I assure you, I have nothing to do with it.”
They turned away, discouraged. With their suspects questioned but without any concrete evidence, the trio faced another puzzle.
As they walked around town, they asked everyone they saw about the motorbike. People kept saying that they had seen it but at different locations. It was almost as if someone were teasing them, making them chase down leads that would come to nothing.
Adrian, Julian, and Dion finished the day very frustrated.
CHAPTER 4
That evening, as they gathered to discuss their next steps, Dion received a mysterious text from an unknown number on his phone: “Meet me at the old cabin in the woods at 10 o’clock tonight. And make sure you don’t bring anyone with you.”
Julian looked at the message and said, “This could be a trap, Dion. We should be careful.”
Dion replied, “I just have to know who ‘R’ is! Could it be Ricky, after all? I’ll go alone, but you guys should wait nearby in case something goes wrong.”
Reluctantly, Adrian and Julian agreed to his plan, and they figured out a way to sneak out of the house and get to the cabin by 10 p.m. When they arrived, they waited, hidden among the trees near the cabin.
As Dion approached the cabin in the moonlight, he spotted a shadowy figure waiting inside. The mysterious person stepped into the dim light, revealing himself to be...
Ricky! Their very first suspect!
Dion gasped, his eyes wide with disbelief. “Ricky? You're ‘R’?”
Ricky hung his head in shame. “I’m so sorry, Dion. I never wanted to do this, but I had no choice.”
Dion’s voice quivered with a mix of emotions. “Why, Ricky? Why did you steal my motorbike?”
Adrian and Julian arrived as Ricky began to explain.
“I’ve been in trouble with some dangerous people lately. They paid me to help them and threatened to tell my family if I didn’t follow their instructions. They told me to take your motorbike and bring it to them.”
“What were you thinking, taking money from criminals?” said Adrian.
“We’ve really been hurting at home, guys. My dad lost his job and my mom has been working to support all of us. You know I have three sisters, so that’s a lot of stuff to buy. I just wanted to help my family.”
“But by stealing?!” said Julian.
“Yeah, I know,” said Ricky, “but I couldn’t find a job that paid enough to really make a difference. I know I was wrong.”
“So why did you send me the clue?” asked Dion.
Ricky quivered as he answered, “I wanted to give you a hint so you could help me. I’m really scared!”
The boys were shocked. They had known Ricky for years and couldn’t imagine him involved in criminal activities.
“This is terrible,” said Julian. “How can we help?”
Dion was no longer angry as he realized his friend was in a horrible jam.
“Ricky, we need to figure out who these bad guys are and get you out of this mess.”
Ricky nodded, tears welling up in his eyes.
“Thanks so much for understanding. I promise I’ll never do anything like this again—if I can only get away from these people.”
CHAPTER 5
Dion, Ricky, Adrian, and Julian regrouped to plan their next move. Determined to uncover the dangerous thieves controlling Ricky, they decided to ask for help from Detective Omar.
As they sat in the living room, the detective listened carefully to Ricky’s story and the new information they had gathered.
“Well, boys, it looks like we’ll have to officially look into this. I’ll start an investigation. But this will be for the professionals. You guys stay out of this because it sounds like these people are dangerous.”
Two days later, Detective Omar and his officers found the secret messages between Ricky and the thieves. He invited the boys down to the station.
“These notes are leading us to a location—an empty warehouse on the outskirts of town,” he said to the boys. “We’re going there tonight, but you WILL NOT COME ALONG! Is that clear?”
Adrian, Julian, Dion, and Ricky nodded and promised they wouldn’t. They didn’t often hear the detective speak so strongly.
After Detective Omar left with his partner for the warehouse, the boys whispered together.
“This isn’t fair. We’re the ones who found out about these thieves. We should be part of arresting them!” said Adrian, who always wanted to be part of the action.
“Yeah,” said Dion, “but your dad warned us to stay away, and we said we would. Suppose they have weapons?”
“We’ll be careful,” said Julian. “We won’t let them see us. There are plenty of places to hide out there.”
So, as night fell, the boys secretly followed Detective Omar and another police officer to the warehouse. The old building creaked and groaned in the darkness as Detective Omar and his partner quietly entered while the boys sneaked in so no one would notice them.
Inside, Adrian, Julian, Dion, and Ricky hid behind a half-wall. Detective Omar and his partner split up to check around.
The boys watched as Detective Omar discovered a hidden room filled with stolen goods, valuable jewelry, and art. The criminals clearly had been using the warehouse as a secret storage place for their stolen goods.
Dion whispered, “This is more serious than we thought.”
Suddenly, the door to the room slammed shut, trapping Detective Omar and the boys inside the hidden room. Three shadowy figures came out from the darkness, their faces hidden beneath masks.
One of the masked figures spoke with a chilling tone. “You’ve stumbled upon something you shouldn’t have. Now you’ll pay the price.”
CHAPTER 6
The boys knew that Detective Omar’s partner was in another part of the warehouse. They watched from behind the wall as Detective Omar reached for his walkie-talkie to call for backup.
“No you don’t,” said one of the thieves as he knocked the phone out of his hands.
Julian signed quietly to his brother, “We need to outsmart them, Adrian.”
Thinking quickly, Adrian remembered the crates of stolen goods around them.
He signed to Julian, “Julian, help me tip over one of these crates.”
Together, they pushed a crate, causing it to crash to the ground with a loud clatter. The noise distracted the masked criminals, giving Julian, Dion, and Ricky the chance to tackle one of them to the ground.
“Can you manage to hold him down?” the detective asked the boys.
“We’ve got him!” yelled Ricky and Dion. Julian held down another criminal so Omar could handcuff him. The last criminal took one look at what was going on and decided to make a run for it, leaving behind the stolen loot.
Detective Omar quickly picked up his radio.
“You’ve got a suspect headed your way!” he yelled to his partner, who caught the third thief as he was trying to run out the warehouse door.
Before they left the warehouse for the police station, Adrian, Julian, Dion, and Ricky looked around. There was a lot of art and jewelry, but no motorbike! How could this be? Did they catch the wrong criminals?
Ricky said, “I can’t figure this out. Dion’s motorbike isn’t here.”
“You mean there’s another thief that stole the motorbike?” said Julian.
“Must be,” said Ricky. “Although how many criminals can there be in one small town?”
The next day, as Adrian, Julian, and Dion walked through the town, they noticed someone acting strangely near Dion’s garage. It was Oliver, a quiet and somewhat mysterious neighbor who had recently moved to Westville.
“Hey, guys, look over there. Isn’t that Oliver?” Julian whispered, nudging his brother and Dion.
Oliver seemed fidgety. He glanced around nervously and quickly left the garage, which made Adrian suspicious.
“Do you think he could be involved?” he asked the others. “Let’s keep an eye on him.”
The boys carefully followed Oliver, who led them to the outskirts of town. They watched as he entered a small, run-down shed that seemed to be a workshop of some sort. Curiosity got the better of them, and Adrian, Julian, and Dion decided to take a better look.
Quietly, they sneaked closer to the building and peeked through the windows. Oliver had his back to them, so he didn’t notice.
“Look!” said Dion. “He’s got a lot of tools and scrap metal...”
“But you’re not seeing the most important thing,” said Adrian. “See in the corner? Those are parts of a motorbike!”
They sneaked closer and stood by the open door.
It looked like Oliver, or someone, had taken apart a bike that looked very similar to Dion’s stolen one.
Julian whispered, “Could Oliver be the mastermind behind all of this?”
Suddenly, Oliver turned around and saw the boys standing there. “What are you doing here?” he yelled. “This is private property!”
Taking the lead, Adrian said, “We’re here because we suspect you might be involved in Dion’s motorbike theft. What’s your connection to all of this?”
Oliver hesitated, his eyes darting around as if thinking about his next move.
“To all what? This is my workshop, and I’m just doing… work!” he said.
“Really?” said Adrian in an accusing voice. “And you just happened to be working on a motorbike that looks exactly like Dion’s?”
Oliver knew that he had been caught.
“Fine,” he said. “Yeah, that’s Dion’s bike. But I had my reasons.”
“Another one with reasons,” said Dion with a smirk.
“Let’s hear him out, guys,” said Julian. “So, what are your reasons, Oliver?”
“Well, I bought a lot of equipment, which was more expensive than I had planned. Plus, I lost big-time in a football pool and ended up owing people a lot of money.”
“So, you figured you could sell off the parts of Dion’s motorbike so you could pay your bills and gambling debts?” asked Adrian.
Oliver looked down at the ground, embarrassed.
“Yeah. Something like that,” he said.
“But why involve Ricky?” Julian asked.
Oliver sighed. “I knew Ricky had gotten mixed up with some criminals. So, I figured that I could get in on the action and ask him to steal the motorbike. He’d think I was in the same gang as the other guys, and he’d do it.”
Feeling angry and disappointed, Dion said, “You could have just asked for help. Instead, you put a lot of people in danger. And got Ricky into even more trouble.”
Oliver didn’t seem very apologetic. “Yeah, well, I didn’t think anyone would understand. I thought this was my only choice.”
“Well, it was a bad choice,” said Julian. “Stealing someone’s property because you bought things you couldn’t afford is pretty dumb.”
The boys told Oliver that he would have to come with them to see Detective Omar, and Oliver, knowing his plan had failed, followed them to the station house.
CHAPTER 7
Back at the Westville Police Station, Detective Omar got everyone up to speed.
“Well, guys,” he explained, “the first group of criminals were a group of art and jewelry thieves who had been operating in several towns. We got the stolen items back to their rightful owners, and the thieves are in jail waiting for a trial. And Ricky won’t have to worry about them anymore.”
“That’s great, Dad!” said Julian. “But what’s going to happen to Oliver?”
“Oliver got lucky,” the detective explained. “Because he’s a teenager, he was brought to juvenile court and sentenced to community service. The judge made him help fix bikes and cars for needy people at Mr. Kamara’s garage.”
Ricky was overcome with emotion.
“I don’t know how to thank you, Detective Omar, and you too, Adrian, Julian, and Dion,” he said, almost in tears. “I couldn’t have ever gotten out of this mess without you.”
“Well, that’s my job, Ricky,” said Detective Omar, “and we’ll have to talk about your involvement in these thefts. However, I don’t think the police will arrest you since you helped to catch the criminals.”
Adrian, Julian, and Dion looked at each other with relief.
“BUT, it isn’t the job of my sons or their friend Dion to help solve a crime.” He turned to the boys. “Do you know you could have gotten seriously hurt or worse by following me?”
The boys stood uncomfortably, not saying anything until Julian spoke up.
“You’re right. It could have been dangerous, Dad,” said Julian. “But you’ve got to admit, we kind of saved the day!”
“Yeah,” said Adrian. “If we hadn’t knocked over those boxes, who knows what would have happened?”
Dion stayed quiet, knowing when it was best not to say anything.
“All right,” said Detective Omar. “I’ll admit that it was pretty good thinking to push over those boxes. But from now on, I don’t want you ever to follow me on a case again!”
Julian, Adrian, and Dion exchanged looks, crossed their fingers behind their backs, and said, “We promise. No more trying to play detective. We’ll stay out of your business.”
And as Detective Omar turned away, Adrian signed to Julian, “Maybe.”
